And Then There Were Five…

New Hampshire joined the ranks of states who are in the process of legalizing same-sex marriage!   The NH State Senate passed a measure similar to one already passed by the State House.  Now, they need to reconcile the two slightly and then send it off to the Governor to sign into law.  This is very similar to how Vermont came to allow gay marriage and – to many – stands as an even stronger and louder message to the detractors than in those states where the issue was decided by the courts.

Personally, I don’t care how it happens as long as it happens.  I can see the value in having it done by the legislative branches.  At the same time, a number of landmark civil rights laws came into effect due to the court system, not the legislature.  Perhaps we’ve actually grown as a society after all.

Either way, this is one more state.  45 more to go (assuming that this makes it all the way into law).  It paves the way for New York to follow suit.  And pretty soon, I think it’s safe to say that most of New England will be on the side of equality.

One state at time.  Equality for all.
